The Board of Directors at their meeting last night approved two changes to the MSAD 17 - FY 18 school calendar in an effort to mitigate the impact of the nine snow days taken this year.  The potential for school to extend into the fourth week of June was seen as a concern.  The board voted to reschedule this Friday’s workshop day from March 23 to the day after the last student day in June.    Students in grades K-12 will attend school this FridayPre Kindergarten students will not attend school this Friday.

The Board also voted to request of the Commissioner of Education permission to extend our regular school day by one hour for two weeks commencing April 23-May 4.  If approved, the regular school day as it exists now would simply be extended by one hour.

If approved by the Commissioner, middle and high school students for two weeks after April vacation will be dismissed at 2:52 everyday except Wednesday.  On Wednesday they will be dismissed at 1:52.  Elementary school dismissal times vary slightly around the district but in general students will be dismissed around 4:05 everyday except Wednesdays.  On Wednesdays elementary students will dismissed around 3:05.  This is a short term pilot opportunity in MSAD 17 that if successful may provide insight for future years.  We will be sending out surveys to parents and students after the two week pilot ends to determine the positive and negative impacts of this model.

The two-week extension of the school day and moving the workshop day will result in making up three snow days.
