October marks the time in the school year when students across the state participate in a state program to measure student progress. Once again Maine will be using the NWEA test “The Maine Through Year Assessment” to provide scores as a measure of student growth throughout the year. This assessment will be used again at the end of the year, to provide performance scores based on the state standards. Why are we doing this assessment? It is important for Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School to administer this assessment so we can have a picture of whether we are meeting the academic needs of our students. When students take the assessments seriously we can better guarantee that we are providing students with the learning they deserve. Who is taking this assessment? Students in their second year of high school (generally this is a sophomore) will be administered their assessment. When is my child taking the assessment? Students on Sophomore Teams A (Pinto, Rowell, Brook), B (McCullough, O’Brien, Fox), and C (Chickering, McCarthy, Correale) will be taking the assessment on Thursday, October 12, 2023. These students will take the reading and math assessment at the same time. Students on Sophomore Team D (Toohey, Truman, Haverinen) will take their assessments over the course of two days on Tuesday, October 11 and Friday, October 13. What if my student is absent on the date of assessment? We will be following up with students after the assessment date to make sure they sit and complete the assessment to provide the most accurate data possible. How do students need to prepare? In order to be prepared for this assessment, students should arrive at school with their charged school-issued laptop. Personal devices cannot be used for this assessment. A few things to know about the Maine Through Year Assessment: The assessment is computer-adaptive. After a correct answer, a student may see a more difficult question. After an incorrect answer, a student may see an easier question. As a result, the assessment adapts to the learner and is unique to every student. The assessment is designed to be untimed. Students should be provided as much time as they need to answer all assessment questions. For the average student, the assessment will take about 60 minutes for each subject The assessment will be used alongside additional sources, such as school assessments and classroom learning to develop a clearer understanding of student and school achievement.
