School nurses provide assessment and first aid treatment for illness and injury; vision and hearing screenings; development of care plans for students needing health and nursing interventions daily or on an emergency basis; emotional support for students in need; assisting classrooms with health education; training and overseeing school personnel who may be responsible for providing care to students. Nurses work in coordination with students, physicians, parents and teachers to decrease the impact of a student's chronic or acute illnesses on their educational experience. Schools without on-site nurses have a school/health secretary who is trained in administering medication and in providing first aid. They are in contact with their schools' nurse who provides guidance and oversight. Please contact your child's school about health concerns. MEDICATION To receive medication in school, including over-the-counter medication, a student must have a written order for the medication from a health care provider on file in the health office. This is school board policy. All medication brought to the Health Office must be in its original container, as purchased from a store or from a pharmacy. Medications will be kept in a locked cabinet in the Health Office and administered only by the school nurse or other staff trained in medication administration. Medications must be delivered to schools by an adult and are not allowed to be transported on buses. Students are not allowed to carry or self-administer medication, even over-the-counter medicine. The only exceptions to this are emergency medications such as inhalers for asthmatics, EpiPens for severely allergic students and diabetic supplies for students with diabetes, and must be cleared by the Health Office prior. IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS (K-12) All children enrolled in a public or private school in Maine must have the following immunizations. Required for PreK entry:

A registered dental hygienist is available to provide dental cleanings, fluoride, sealants and oral hygiene instruction. This service is available to students who have difficulty accessing dental care. MaineCare is accepted and payment plans are available. Contact your school's nurse or complete the form and send to your child's school. Fluoride Varnish Your child can receive a free fluoride varnish treatment at school. With your permission, a trained person will apply a fluoride varnish treatment to help strengthen the teeth. The fluoride will be placed on your child’s teeth twice during the school year. This program does not take the place of regular check-ups at a dental office. This program is not the same as the dental services offered by TOOTH FAIRIES, INC. SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CENTER (OHCHS and OHMS) SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CENTER (SBHC) of Western Maine Health has a pediatric healthcare provider who is available during school hours at OHCHS and OHMS to see students with parental permission.
